Reminders for Ph.D. Students who will take qualification written exam in 110
academic year 2nd semester
1. The examination will be conducted in accordance with “Directions Governing
Ph.D. Candidate Qualification Exam”.
2. Application Date: from now until 12:00PM, March 16, 2022.
Please fill out the application form in p.4 and submit to the Department Library
along with one copy of your transcript for all semesters.
3. Scheduled Exam Date: April 20 to April 22, 2022.
4. Scheduled Date of Announcement for Exam Subjects, Exam Drafters, and Exam
Date: March 30, 2022.

Directions Governing Ph.D. Candidate Qualification Exam
Applicable for students enrolled in 105 academic years

1. Department of Hydraulic and Ocean Engineering is committed to enhance the
   research capability of Ph.D. degree students. This implementation is established as
   per the NCKU Implementation of Policy for Preliminary Qualification examination
   of Doctoral Degree Candidate.
2. Qualification exam are implemented in the format of written exam and oral exam,
   and is given once per academic semester. The Department Office shall announce the
   examination date and application process.
3. The department shall organize a committee to conduct the qualification exam. The
   department chairman takes up the position of the convener of qualification exam
   committee, and invites 3 to 5 faculties in the department every semester to join the
   committee.
4. Ph.D. degree students are allowed to take qualification exam after finished taking 18
   credits, and should complete qualification exam within 3 years after enrolled to the
   university. Students who failed to complete the qualification exam in the designate
   time frame will be dismissed from the university.
5. Qualification written exam includes two subjects. Students shall seek approval of
   advisor at first, and select the subjects of examination at their first attendance of
   qualification exam. The qualification exam committee will recommend two
   professors to formulate questions and grade the papers.
   Subjects for Water Resource Group:
   Subject #1: Hydrology, Hydraulics (choose either of the two)
   Subject #2: Professional subject (recommended by advisor)

   Subjects for Ocean Engineering Group:
   Subject #1: Introductory Offshore Physics, Introductory Offshore
   Hydrodynamics (choose either of the two)

   Subject #2: Professional subject (recommended by advisor)

6. Foreign students are allowed to choose the subjects of examination which are taught
   in English.
7. Ph.D. students who pass written exam should submit English thesis research plan to
   dissertation committee. The Department Office shall notify the Registrar Division
   after students pass oral exam. The Registrar Division shall state “Student fulfilled the
   Preliminary Qualification Examination, and the student’s qualification was verified for
   accuracy” in the remarks column of the transcript.
8. This Implementation of Directions, with any applicable modification, will be executed
   once the approval is granted by Department Affairs Meeting.
